VOLT HOCKEY

Volt hockey is a 3v3 team sport designed for people with limited upper and lower body mobility, such as those with muscular dystrophy. Combining elements of go-karting and hockey, volt hockey allows players to navigate a sturdy wiffle ball around a basketball court using specialized wooden chairs equipped with paddles. These motorized chairs can be customized to meet each player’s needs and can reach speeds of up to 10 mph, making the game both fast-paced and exhilarating.

HISTORY

Late 2021

The Beginning

Volt hockey first arrived in the United States in late 2021 thanks to the vision and generosity of a local donor who discovered the sport while attending an expo in Germany. Inspired by its potential to expand adaptive sports opportunities, the donor purchased the very first set of volt hockey equipment in the country.

The equipment was donated to the Boston Self Help Center (BSHC), a nonprofit run by and for people with disabilities. The BSHC already operated adaptive sports programming, including power soccer, and became the home of the newly formed Boston Whiplash — the first volt hockey team in the United States.

Building the First U.S. Team

The Boston Whiplash quickly began attracting players from across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Connecticut.

A dedicated student volunteer from Northeastern University, participating through the university’s service-learning program at the Boston Self Help Center, played a key role in the team’s early development. This individual helped coach the team in its earliest days, raise awareness of the sport, and organize the initial program structure. They would later go on to serve as the first President of the United States Volt Hockey Association (USVHA), helping lay the groundwork for the sport’s national growth.

First World Cup Appearance

Less than a year after forming, the Boston Whiplash made history by competing in the inaugural Volt Hockey World Cup in Gävle, Sweden — the team’s first-ever tournament. Teams from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and Canada were in attendance.

For a brand-new program from a country where the sport had never existed before, simply stepping onto the international stage marked a major milestone.

Silver Medal in Toronto

In May 2023, the Boston Whiplash competed in the first North American Volt Hockey Championships in Toronto, Canada. The team delivered an extraordinary performance, earning a silver medal in the Elite Division.

In just under two years, the Whiplash had evolved from a brand-new startup team into an internationally competitive program.

World Cup Bronze in Sweden

In September 2023, the Boston Whiplash returned to Sweden to compete in the Volt Hockey World Cup. Facing experienced teams from across Scandinavia and Canada, the Whiplash continued to build on the momentum from earlier in the year following their silver medal performance in Toronto.

After several hard-fought matches, the team earned bronze in Division 2, bringing home their first medal from the World Cup. The result marked another important milestone for the young program and demonstrated how quickly the team had progressed on the international stage.

International Mentorship and Growth

Beginning in 2024, the Boston Whiplash entered a new phase of development through mentorship from the BVH Lions of Oslo, Norway — one of the sport’s most established and elite teams, with more than 20 years of experience.

The BVH Lions began mentoring the Whiplash’s coaches, sharing tactical knowledge, training methodologies, and strategic insight developed through decades of competition. They also provided hands-on support at Scandinavian tournaments where the Boston Whiplash competed, strengthening international relationships and accelerating the growth of the U.S. team.

A New Chapter

By early 2025, the Boston Whiplash had grown to more than ten active players, and the need for expanded local infrastructure became clear. Parents, players, and volunteers came together to establish a new nonprofit organization: the Eastern Massachusetts Volt Hockey Club (EMVHC).

Created specifically to support the Boston Whiplash and future volt hockey teams in the region, the EMVHC marked the next step in strengthening and sustaining the sport locally. The team also relocated from their original home in Roxbury at the BCYF Tobin to Newton, Massachusetts, where they now practice at the Charles River Campus of UMass Amherst.

First USA Volt Hockey Training Clinic

In August 2025, the EMVHC hosted the first USA volt hockey training clinic at the UMass Amherst Charles River Campus in Newton, Massachusetts. Organized by the United States Volt Hockey Association (USVHA), the clinic brought together more than 20 players for four days of training.

Players and coaches from the BVH Lions of Oslo, Norway — who had begun mentoring the Boston Whiplash the year prior — traveled to lead the clinic. The intensive training experience significantly raised the level of play and strengthened the growing volt hockey community in the region.
